Interfacing (DSI, CSI, I2C, etc.) • Sound through I2S DAC

I'm trying to get audio from my Pi with an PCM5102 analogue to digital converter. I've found a few guides that all seem to say much the same thing: edit /boot/config.txt and /etc/asound.comf etc, but I'm just getting

aplay: device_list:272: no soundcards found...

I'm wondering if there is a more basic test: for instance to scan the I2S bus and see if there is anything there...

Or if anyone has other suggestions on how to get it working...
