Using a Pico or similar as a Smart Peripheral, creating a degree of separation between a quite expensive 'PC' and what it is controlling, makes sense to me.No, its more like connecting motors etc and LED displays, because I don't want to damage the RPi5, while doing it
I am not sure what is readily available in that department. I used to recommend grabbing old inexpensive Pi to risk when experimenting with hardware but the shortage pushed prices up and availability down. Not sure how the market for old Pi is now.
