You are entitled to your opinion - and no one can take that away from you. So, you need not worry on that matter.
Incidentally, my understanding is that the switch from user "pi" to making the installer (i.e., the person doing the install) pick a username was not done so much because anybody decided that, "Oh, the default username of pi is not good", but rather because legislation had been enacted (in one or more legal domains) saying you couldn't do that anymore. If memory serves, it had something to do with a mass-marketed security camera kit that included a default username (and password), such that an outsider could gain access to your security system if he knows these defaults and you had not changed them (as will be the case for most users). So, the legislation was enacted to protect these naive buyers.
I would not be surprised to find that the move to the "700 protected home dirs" thing was similarly motivated.
