I use a non standard configuration:

• btrfs root partition
• Regular read only snapshots
• Snapshots backed up to separate drive using rsync
• Local snapshots automatically cleared once they age out

Recover is a matter of booting from a different boot media, mounting the partitions and restoring from a snapshot.

Using read only snapshots means zero chance of something changing while rsync is running and potentially corrupting the backup.
