Thanks for the suggestions. The good news is that the results of my calls to "python --version" and "/usr/bin/python --version" are the same. The bad news is that they both returned Python version 2.7.18. This version is ancient. What could cause this?
Also, I set my interpreter Python executable path to one ending in /bin/python3.9 but it returned the same error as before,
