So I tried running top to see what was going on with and without VLC running and interestingly enough there is little to no change in system load with or without VLC running. I'm still sitting at an average load of 1.8-2 regardless, so I think there is something else going on. I have a custom skin running that simplifies the interface and enlarges buttons so I can operate them more easily from the touchscreen and I did notice randomly that it seems to run very slightly better when I have a song playing whose title isn't long enough to require scrolling. Seems like a really weird thing to slow the system down, but it would point toward more of a display driver kind of issue maybe. Though I still have the slowdown problem even when it's not the active window, so it's not actually updating any visually because it's behind other programs.
