I have no direct experience to share, but I suggest that to protect from direct sun you have a metal sunshade painted white or lacquered polished metal and mounted with a good air gap to the RPi's enclosure.
Maybe put the Pi in a metal case that can draw heat from the Pi board/chips. Maybe a Flirc case?
Maybe paint that case matt black to aid passive heat dissipation.
