I have yet to try it as I'm a bit concerned about losing more GPIO pins, (three are already damaged!). Also, everything is wired into a cabinet, including the mains supply, so I need to do some dismantling - I will do this tomorrow to make sure that the steppers and the drivers are still working.
I did suggest wiring just the DIR input and pulsing it manually with a 3.3V supply. It might work sufficiently for testing. If not, you could use a 5V supply.
