In the meantime I just managed to get it working again.
Was a matter of holding down the bootsel button, plugging in the pico and upload again from the IDE.
For some reason this did not work when another sketch was loaded.
I'm a bit reluctant to start learning micropython because of the learning curve, but if a more stable
usb way of programming is guaranteed, I may well do this.
