You can damage those flat ribbon cables during insertion. Slight folds or rough edges can push things out of alignment. I see that happening when people try to insert a cable with a case or cooler or hat restricting access to the port.
Flat ribbon cables can also fail to maintain the signalling when placed against a metal case or heatsink, a problem I had with a PCIe cable. The metal changes the capacitance.
