I'm the newest of newbies, but I have just been through connecting to my Pi5 - per a Udemy course

IP addresses can change. You should at least try to check the net. There's a program called Angry IP that works ( somewhat) for that. You just browse for Angry IP

Your Network IP RANGE should come up when you start it. Do a scan and when it says OK you can click on the Ping column and it should sort to active pings. The rpi name should appear next to the IP. It doesn't always. Reboot the Pi and wait a bit to retry the scan.

I was able to connect by just opening a cmd box and typing ssh (piname)@(IP) then it asks for the password. (and yes, you never gave it your user name).

Note, it will give you a bunch of stuff about not being able to verify things and you have to type yes to get to the password. It is supposed to be a good idea to go to C:\users\(username) and clear out the .ssh folder in case it may have issues from other attempts.

When you type the password, it will NOT show anything. After the<CR>, it should login if you got it right.

I'm not pretending to know WTF is going on or trying to mansplain. I'm just telling you what woked for me.

You can also do this with PUTTY - which I have used, but really know nothing about. with PUTTY, you should just be able to put in the IP and hit open after you picked SSH for the mode.

Would be nice if this stuff was logical, but it doesn't seem to be.

One more question - did you pick the right network when you configured your PI -- you can do that when you download the image ( and you can redownload the image to the same SD) - don't ask how I know that.

Good luck,

HJ
