"only Synology's own hard drives, and third-party drives certified by Synology, will offer "the full range of functions and support."

The list of certified third-party drives is three pages long for my DS923+

No need to worry.
I looked at the Synology compatibility list at

https://www.synology.com/en-us/compatib ... t_col=size

and also

https://www.synology.com/en-us/compatib ... t_col=size

The largest Synology drive was 20TB but not listed in the Synology store. However, it's on Amazon for around US$ 900.

The largest certified third-party drive is 16TB.

For comparison a new Exos 24TB drive is currently around $500 and according to

https://www.seagate.com/content/dam/sea ... -en_US.pdf

uses conventional magnetic recording. Note that recertified CMR drives with 28TB are $400.

Since on the website
Synology will not provide technical support if your device is not on the Synology Products Compatibility List.
then you're on your own unless paying double for the compatible lower-capacity hard disks.

As already mentioned, you get a newer version of Samba server with Raspberry Pi as well.
