Anything will work. Home automation has been a thing since forever. Even 640k ought to be enough.
Seriously though, I'm running a home automation server on a Pi 3B with no trouble. It depends exactly what you are doing.
Luckily, Pis are cheap and easily available. Get one. Try it. If it's inadequate then get another one with more resources.
