Hi! Thanks for your reply. Yes, Raspberry Pi OS Lite works and you can use their rpicam-apps if all you need are still images or testing tools. They come pre-installed on Raspberry Pi OS Lite (at least 64 bit version, haven't looked at 32 bit) by default. If that's all you need you could use that. The reason I don't is because I care about boot time and really want to learn more about buildroot and Linux in general.
I have taken a look at showmewebcam before to sort of guide me on how their buildroot system works but since they don't use libcamera there's not much I can look at to figure out why libcamera isn't working. A few things do need to be changed in the default buildroot for it to work but it shouldn't be much once I've figure out what exactly I'm missing. After I can get it to work reliably I'll start removing anything unnecessary for better performance but for now I'm just focusing on getting it to detect my camera.
If you're interested in using a simple libcamera application to stream video the one I linked at the top of the original post is a good start.
