Much appreciated; thanks for your insights.
So as is, if I grab DreamPi that would be basically enough to run any old computer? I saw a ton of videos all pointing at the need of a VOIP box to simulate a line; or a large router that could do that, but I found that DP was incredibly simple as you mentioned. Just with a simple battery to simulate the VLI and a USB modem connected to the pi, you can use the dreamcast or even a decently recent computer, like a windows Xp/98/OSX machine.
I was under the impression that the Pi should run PPP and some simulator like Asterisk, but I am glad it doesn't need to, as that simplify the overall setup in the end.
Now the next step is as you mentioned, go beyond the TCP/IP so I can use also machines that do not have a browser. For BBS I can connect to one using a RPI but that would be via serial port, not modem port, so it would be interesting to find out how to set things up.
So if I understand this correctly, I need an actual server running the services (mirc, BBS and so on), and then that service on the Pi will need to translate something that the modem understand? Has it been done before?
I wish I could learn more about what has been done on the DreamPi, as it does what it does pretty well![Smile :)]()
