A 2x AAA battery pack is prox 3V, depending on charge state.
From https://datasheets.raspberrypi.com/pico ... asheet.pdf :
"Pico uses an on-board buck-boost SMPS which is able to generate the required 3.3V (to power RP2040 and external
circuitry) from a wide range of input voltages (~1.8 to 5.5V). This allows significant flexibility in powering the unit from
various sources such as a single Lithium-Ion cell, or 3 AA cells in series. Battery chargers can also be very easily
integrated with the Pico powerchain."

So your 2*AA-solution is perfect.

You could use LiPo rechargeable batteries instead.

I prefer those LiPo which have protection circuit on board (overcharge, low voltage). Different forms available, flat or 18650. As the 18650 batteries with protection are a few millimeters longer and don't match the available battery holders, I cut the battery holders in the middle and mount them into a 3D printed base with a mount for a switch. Perhaps this is an Idea you could reuse.
