Remote I/O error is normally an I2C comms failure.
The imx290 family of sensors have no ID register that can be read during probe to confirm it is installed correctly, so the driver assumes the sensor exists. When it comes to actually using it there are a bundle of I2C writes, and those are failing.
Check your connections.
imx290 has been supported on Pi5 in the mainline libcamera project since at least January 2025, and possibly in our repo for longer. There should be no need to add any extra files at all.
