I used to have 64 GB tower PC and never used the full 64 GB. Now I have 16 GB devices, notebook, Pi 5, plus Pi 4 at 4 GB and 2 GB plus Zero 2 with 0.005 or whatever GB.
16 GB is a limitation.
My storage was limited to 1 TB for years then 2 TB for most things. A search of 2 TB used 12 GB in a 16 GB machine. Not a problem.
I now have 2.7 TB on a 4 TB disk. File searches use 13.5 GB of RAM for the file cache which pushes Linux into paging. I need more than 16 GB for frequent use.
For a Pi 5 file server, previously a Pi 4 file server with 1 TB disks, I am looking at an NVMe system disk to allow really fast paging. The files will be on a 4 TB USB 3 NVMe disk. A search over a network will be stupidly slow. I will use screen sharing to run the searches locally and return only the File Manager screen across the network.
Lucky our RAM is no longer limited to 64K.![Cool 8-)]()
