I can see why the disk cache gets large during a big search, but not why it should incur paging?I now have 2.7 TB on a 4 TB disk. File searches use 13.5 GB of RAM for the file cache which pushes Linux into paging.
Blocks read from the disk and retained in the cache to speed future access, may simply be discarded if there is contention for RAM. There is an identical copy on the disk so there is no need to save the block in the swap area.
Perhaps the search algorithm is doing something weird!
