Annoying...but; given how fast and easy it is to rebuild a Pi boot drive; I tend to do that quite quickly rather than spend ages trying to find the solution.
In fact for some of my installations..Like the one that my elderly parents use; I keep several ready set up SD cards; just in case!![:D]( "Very Happy")
