Automation, sensing and robotics • Microstepping and stepper jumping continuously

Hi,
To make my Folgertech FT-5 (MKS Gen 1.4, Cartesian, two stepper motors in the Y axis) run smoother and with less noise, I have replaced the stepper motor controller with a DM542T (https://www.oyostepper.com/goods-111-Di ... Motor.html).
This changed the MKS's 1:16 ratio to a 1:256 ratio in "extended cycle" mode, which worked fine at first, but then the Y axis started jumping.
I tried changing the voltage from 0.9V to 1.5V, but that had no effect.

Is there a fundamental incompatibility between dual motors and microstepping? I considered switching the machine to a corexy motor, but it's a lot of work to get the microstepping to work properly, and I need it to work properly, and I plan on getting a custom corexy motor next year. Should I just give up on it and keep living with the noise and the paddy surface?

Thanks for reading!
