Why would I want to use an active directory domain on a Linux only network? I'm not really convinced that is an issue that would make it worth using Samba if all you have are Linux/Unix clients. There are some, one being that you can use vfs_acl_xattr and gain the possibility of multiple users having different permissions on a file or directory, rather than using a group (which would get the same permissions for all members of the group). The biggest benefit would be felt if you used Samba to run an Active Directory domain.
Sorry, perhaps my question wasn't detailed enough.
My question is what would be the advantage of using Samba in a Linux only environment? As I understand it; Samba is essentially a free software re-implementation of the SMB networking protocol and provides file and print services for various 'doze clients...So what benefit would there be in using it in a Linux only environment over the various other solutions which don't have the MS support?
