Troubleshooting • Device or resource busy

Hi,
So I have an arduino connected to my RPI4. I'm doing serial communication. The code works and everything looks fine. Then I make a change in Thonny, and now I get a

device or resource busy: '/dev/ttyUSB0'

when I try to run my updated program.

I can confirm that my arduino is occupying /dev/ttyUSB0. I've tried stopping thonny, closing thonny, unplugging and replugging the arduino. Nothing works. I have to reboot the RPI to get rid of the error.

Everything was fine, and suddenly I get this. What's happening here? How do I free up this port without rebooting the RPI?
