MemTotal: 758776 kB
here, you can see that it has 758,000kb, or ~758mb
I have an RPi4B that is reporting (/proc/meminfo) only 758kB instead of 4GB. I'm guessing the RAM IC has developed a fault. Is there any memory test facility or debug output that can confirm this ?
yet earlier, you claimed it only has 758kB, 1/1000th of that!

my first guess, is that fixup4.dat is corrupt

Yes, it certainly was my bad to write 758kB when I should have written 758MB. Your suggestion to provide the /proc/meminfo list was a good one. As was the suggestion to test using a standard kernel. Luckily I have rsyslog enabled on this system and the clue was at the start of syslog.

This CONFIG_HIGHMEM kernel parameter has me puzzled. I thought it was to enable more than 4GB in 32-bit mode but apparently it's not that simple. It appears to have no effect on arm-v6 systems (e.g. RPI-B, RPi-zero) with only 512MB RAM. It also appears to have no effect on arm-v7 devices with 1GB RAM as the reported total is 934MB which sounds like 1GB - 64MB for video RAM. It's only with the arm-v7l kernel on my 4GB RPi4B that I see any effect. The kernel help text suggest leaving CONFIG_HIGHMEM off unless required so I'll leave it off in my v6 and v7 kernels and just have it in the v7l kernel.

Cheers,
Steven
