Doesn't the hardware on the Raspberry Pi 0–2 have some kind of issue with dates past 2038?

I think you're thinking of exactly the problem addressed in Trixie and discussed in that article. 64-bit linux has always had 64-bit time whereas 32-bit linux (which the Pi zero, 1, and 2 are limited to) is only recently being updated to support 64-bit time.
