From the original post it's not clear whether their external USB drive D was unplugged while running Raspberry Pi imager or not. If it were unplugged, then nothing could have been written to it. On the other hand, if the drive were unplugged and then plugged without proper unmounting, it's possible some writes meant for the SD card wiped it out.anyway, this might not be the problem but it is a big open flaw in the program.
Swapping USB drives around without unmounting can lead to weird things
The claim files worth money were lost makes one wonder about bitcoin and similar. Hopefully that's not the case, but people have lost millions just by losing a drive containing bitcoin.
