I've used both RealVNC and TigerVNC on my systems when I do use VNC (most of the time I find a remotely-started xterm does the trick).
A few years ago I wrote up a method to use TigerVNC (or TightVNc if desired) on the server side and configure multiple systemd instances, each with its own resolution. I wanted this bc my desktop and laptop have different screen resolutions, and I wanted each of them to have the largest possible VNC window with no scroll bars.
