One thing worth doing, and it seems you may have done this already, is testing with a WIZNet-W5500-EVB-Pico, and a Pico W, 2W, or similar, so you can better determine if it's an issue of MicroPython not handling it at all, a WIZnet related issue, or just an issue for the WIZNet-W5100S-EVB-Pico.

I have indeed tested with a PicoW and 2W, both of which, for IF_STA, work as I expect they would.
Sadly, I don't have a W5500-EVB-Pico, and my favoured seller (Pimoroni) doesn't have stock, although Digi-Key does.
On the other hand, I do have a Pico, a prototyping board and a W5500 module

Looking at the board-specific config files, the differences between the models appears to be a board name string, a default hostname and the setting for MICROPY_PY_NETWORK_WIZNET5K.

Since it works with PicoW, it looks like it is specific to Wiznet, but I will work through the network stuff to see what different branches (based on the '#defines) are actually doing.
