vc4 on all Pis provides the display scanout. On Pi 0-3 it also provides the 3D acceleration.
Pi4 stepped up to a newer version of the 3D hardware which required a new 3D driver, and that is v3d.
Render nodes are provided for 3D acceleration to multiple applications, whereas the card nodes are generally for scanout where you have a single application in control (generally the window manager).
