Thanks, jojopi... I appreciate you taking the time to correct me.

"...This change happened over fifteen years ago, not in trixie... The old workaround of using eth0:alias still works, to the extent that it ever did, but that too is long superseded. I am not sure how you managed to stumble onto it, even in bullseye..."

Perhaps in addition to advertising my own ignorance, I think this just underscores the reliability of the platform. I started using Red Hat v2 around Christmas 1995, but I switched to Mandrake, then Mandriva, before settling on ubuntu with 4.10 (Warty Warthog) That must have been around the time I picked up using "ifconfig -a" ... and when I enter it now, on my Mint 21.3/Virginia desktop, it works just fine and doesn't issue a redirect or deprecation message - or I think I would have picked up on "ip addr" by now. I switched to Mint around the time of 12.04 ("Precise Pangolin"), when Canonical started selling user data and haven't looked back. Throughout all those releases and distro changes, "ifconfig -a" has worked just fine.

It would be nice - but conceited - to think I was lucky. I think that's just having a stable OS...
