My particular interest was using it to control other electronic hobby stuff remotely but it seems the risk of misuse is far greater than any advantage such a scheme might offer

It can be accessible over the internet without being public. That's what a VPN server allows.

Your remote client connects to your VPN then connects to your web through that.

As long as you use a modern protocol/encryption with strong keys you'll be fine. You only need to expose the port(s) needed by the vpn.

Or there's Raspberry Pi Connect. That give you secure remote access to your Pi (Desktop or command line) so you could run your webserver to only accept connections from the Pi it's running on.
In curiosity, how well does Raspberry Pi Connect work in a browser on an iPad or Android phone?

I've no idea. I don't use it and don't have an ipad.
As a note, before making anything like furnace or sprinkler settings remote accessible, I'd suggest adding a failsafe that prevents any remote control gone wrong from damaging everything.

As demonstrated by commercial water treatment facilities, power generation and Wile E. Coyote, a failsafe failsafe is surprisingly difficult.

Yup. TBH that sort of home automation isn't something I'd try even if it was restricted to internal use. There's a lot to be said for having someone else to blame when it goes wrong.

You need failsafes that function correctly before you even think about allowing any access let alone remotely. (Side note: too few amateur programmers don't think about this. Something that works under ideal conditions is often seen as fit for real use.)
