I had a similar duel homing problem with a Pi at home. It is connected via USB to a webcam, an old Canon scanner and an UPS. Although the WiFi is solid, the USB connections can get flakey. Again I decided to use both interfaces. As with the other Pi that's where the trouble got worse. Eventually I left the Ethernet cable connected and used rfkill to disable the WiFi and all the USB problems disappeared.
