I have never worked with a UASRT so I guess the answer is No.

I now have a powered USB 3 hub. I perform the same steps but replug USB C after running rpiboot. lsusb shows the BMC:

blm3@RPI5-GATEWAY:~ $ sudo lsusb
Bus 004 Device 002: ID 05e3:0626 Genesys Logic, Inc. Hub
Bus 004 Device 001: ID 1d6b:0003 Linux Foundation 3.0 root hub
Bus 003 Device 005: ID 0a5c:2712 Broadcom Corp. BCM2712D0 Boot
Bus 003 Device 002: ID 05e3:0610 Genesys Logic, Inc. Hub
Bus 003 Device 001: ID 1d6b:0002 Linux Foundation 2.0 root hub
Bus 002 Device 001: ID 1d6b:0003 Linux Foundation 3.0 root hub
Bus 001 Device 004: ID 046d:c077 Logitech, Inc. Mouse
Bus 001 Device 003: ID 046d:c31c Logitech, Inc. Keyboard K120
Bus 001 Device 002: ID 1a40:0101 Terminus Technology Inc. Hub
Bus 001 Device 001: ID 1d6b:0002 Linux Foundation 2.0 root hub

but lsblk, blkid, fdisk -l (sudo), do not. There is no entry in /dev. The red light is on (not the green light). RasPi Imager from the CM% host still does not detect the eemc.

What do I do next?Flash an SD card and boot the base card like a regular board?
sorry, don't get what you're doing!
your host (which seems to be another CMx system) is connected to the powered USB hub, right?
now start rpiboot on the host
only when it prints 'Waiting for BCM2835/6/7/2711/2712...' connect the target CM5 to the USB hub. That should allow you for flashing the CM5.

Sorry, but you can't boot a CM5 with eMMC from a uSD, only USB/NVMe Boot is possible.
