Why did you run sudo rpi-update?

That's not recommended unless you've a. been told to by an RPL engineer, and b. are able to deal with potential issues. rpi-update brings in a bunch of beta (possibly alpha) software of potentially dubious reliability.

I'm not sure but I don't think it's trivially reversible either.

If it we're my system I'd reinstall onto a fresh SD card and not do rpi_update. You can then recover any data you need to from the broken OS installation.

Or you could uninstall NM and revert to dhcpcd of ifupdown. But then you'd be out of step with the OS default.
Ah ok well that is unfortunate I was testing with one image but maybe I can reinstall the kernel through apt. Just trying to find what that package name was to be able to do that, would that work as the image applied and the headers would be mainstream.

I did rpi update to specifically try new kernel features but there is not a good way to roll back once done I guess. I hope it will get fixed if not I will post an issue on GitHub for raspberry pi Linux and see if they have a suggestion. I did not see anything that should break it in the changes but it seems like there was something that was clearly added that must be not working properly. Is the original version of the rpi kernel using dhcpd or networkmanager?
