I’ve seen one of the iPhone sound level apps claim that they’ve calibrated their app with each model of phone. This supposedly makes it accurate. Would that be possible or is it just marketing?
Totally misleading, yes they may have a correction for each model of phone but it is still only a loose approximation and won't be repeatable phone to phone.
I used to work in calibration, even top end measuring equipment had wide differences that had to be calibrated out, I can't remember what other audio equipment I did but I remember I either calibrated headphones that were used for hearing tests or the dummy head that calibrated headphones, perhaps both, I calibrated a lot of random items, all certified and audited to national standards.
