Got kind of the same feeling with racing games and simulators. The immersion has improved massively force feedback, motion rigs, proper simulation physics but ironically the AI is still one of the weakest points. Opponents rarely feel natural, they follow fixed lines and react in ways no human driver ever would. So you get this weird situation where the simulation side has never been more realistic, but the "game" side still feels dated in some ways. You spend lot of money into building the perfect simracing rig but at the end you can't get the most out of it.
