A 26-pin long pin adapter would allow some 40 pin HATs to plug in. But the two pins that handle the HAT ID won't be connected, so no automatic recognition.40 pin HATs won't fit.
You'd have to allow for the pins that changed function. Pins 3 and 5 changed from GPIO 0 and 1 (i2c0) to GPIO 2 and 3 (i2c1), and pin 13 changed from GPIO 21 to GPIO 27.Any hardware that uses only the first 26 pins should be compatible when used with dupont/jump wires.
