Thanks for your reply! I didn't have access to an oscilloscope over the weekend, but I tested it this morning. The Trigger Signal works as required according to the IMX296 manual.It's unlikely that the trouble was caused by just updating rpicam-apps. Therefore, a hardware problem is possible.
The fact that you get the timeout, suggests the camera driver has configured it correctly it to wait for the trigger -- but for some reason it didn't detect it. Can you check with a multimeter or oscilloscope that XTRIG is quiescent at 1.8V and pulses to 0V?
Does it work with multiple pulses? ISTR you need at least 2 -- one to start the exposure, and another to read out the image (unless I'm confusing it with the HQ camera...). You might also need to disable AWB and AGC/AEC. But those things have not changed with any software update as far as I know.
Disabling AWB and AGC/AEC doesn't help, though:
