We moved to XenForo some years back and that's been great, learning curve once the skin had been developed was minimal to phpBB it changed from.
But the main things are
anything that makes moderating easier,
anything that helps combat spam/aibots.
Anything that allows easier image usage
Anything that improves the post moving and informing the user so they might find their post again and keep the place tidy.
After that it just UX
Personally I'm so use to the UBB/VBB/phpBB of old that these modern style that are used are confusing, flat and much harder to follow.
For all the quibbles of the contrast problems of this forum, it's not great unless you use a high quality screen. It is functional and easy to follow (bar people instance of quoting everything).
And the Save draft, Preview, Submit buttons are wonky mobile.
(On our forum photos are automatically recompresses etc into webp for storage and performance for the forum, the user can upload images with ease.)
