You can check to see if the Pi has detected a low power event (or some other problem) with

Code:

vcgencmd get_throttled
It should return "throttled=0x0" if there have been no problems detected. If it returns 0x10000, 0x1 or 0x10001, then a power issue has been detected.

"Pretty powerful" power supplies aren't always good enough. It's not just a matter of how much power, it's more can it adjust quickly enough when the load changes. The Pi official power supply has been carefully engineered to make sure it can supply a stable voltage at all times.
