What sort of case is the Pi in?

You should make sure that you shutdown correctly before switching off the power. That's true with most computers. Pulling the power when the system is still writing to disk; is likely to corrupt the disk. It sounds like you are doing that.
I have some Pi's that I leave on pretty much all the time and others which are constantly being turned on and off. I don't have any specific procedure that I use.
Can you reformat the card on your Mac/another computer?
What SDcards are you using?
