If you connect your phone via Android Auto and use the Torque Pro app (I have successfully used it with the Vgate Bluetooth OBD dongle) would that work for you?
Probably a lot easier than 'rolling your own' solution.

A couple of different Hyundai - again can't remember models unfortunately.
It didn't work with my 2002 Porsche Boxster 3.2S.
