Troubleshooting • Rpi5 PCIE lane and/or carrier board dead?

Hello,

So the other day I was moving my pi 5 and Waveshare 3S UPS (both were off) when the cheap ribbon cable that came with my Freenove M.2 NVME Adapter touched the battery contacts and went poof. This only seemed to effect the middle of the cable, the ends were intact.

I'm trying to get it up and running, but I don't think it's going to work. My question is: is there anything more I can test (before buying anything else) to determine if it's the Freenove board or the pcie lane on the pi that's bad? So far I've tried:

0.) The ssd worked previously so it shouldn't be a driver or compatability issue.
1.) Put the ssd into my Windows PC and it works fine. Even re-imaged it with raspberry pi OS.
2.) Ordered new (better ribbon cables). When the pi boots the "on" and "sta" lights stay lit if I'm trying to mount it as storage, if I try to boot from it they flash like crazy. <- can't find any documentation on what they should be doing in those situations.
3.) Flashed an SD card so I can boot the pi up, changed the eeprom so it boots from sd card first. Then added the ssd and checked lsblk, then added the boot/firmware/config to enable pcie. Tried lsblk again, pi is just not seeing the ssd.

Anything more I can do to check it on either end?

Thanks,

Jim
