I bet no one else has ever screwed-up that waySeems that in that process the version of blink.c that was left in my directory was a quick hack that laid there forgotten until I put this new Pico together 3 years later.
The reasons I have never liked the way pico-examples is structured is it doesn't make it easy to clone an example to something standalone and out-of-tree, which can be edited without affecting what was originally delivered. It encourages in-place editing with the outcome of messed-up examples or at least something different to what was delivered.
I believe the official Raspberry Pi VS Code Pico Extension better handles creating standalone clones of examples when using VS Code but haven't tried that.
Of course that won't entirely avoid using files from the wrong place, files which were hacked for one thing not working with what you are now using. I have to acknowlede my own tale of woe in that respect.
