The main reason I gave up on OMV is the lack of flexibility. I can understand it if installed on my Pi Zero 2 but not on a Pi 5 where most of the processing power is wasted. Better to add SMB and the other options manually. Then I can use the rest of the Pi 5 for recording the Olympic games, something incredibly useful as the marathon is always on at a time when I cannot watch live.Note: openmediavault (like other NAS solutions) expects to have full, exclusive control over OS configuration and cannot be used within a container. Also, no graphical desktop user interface can be installed in parallel.
The install for Nextcloud downloads a script which does the actual install. You can read the script to see the changes. You could modify the script to run in smaller chunks and log the changes. test the changes. Then add whatever else you want. Home automation. Irrigation systems. Perhaps an intellectually challenging game like DOOM.
