There's a few things in that article that are poor practice, that aren't really explained, and at least one unnecessary step but if it works for you and you're happy with it that's good.
I'm contemplating stripping the drives out of my soon-to-be-useless Apple Time Capsules and getting another RPi to build my own NAS. Or maybe that's a bit too cocky!
It's not that hard. Have a read of the guide I linked to above.
