HATs and other add-ons • Re: 2TB SSD options (power from an RPi5)

Do you use the smaller NVMe drives that you mention with something like the NVMe Base that Pimoroni produce? And, if so, is your impression that it causes any appreciable warming of the Pi that it's mounted underneath? As I tend to leave the Pi5 that I'd use it with (if I go that route rather than a SATA-attached disk on the USB3 port), I'd rather not do anything that causes the Pi to get any warmer than is absolutely necessary, although I dare say that the idle power draw should be fairly insignificant.

I currently have two Pi5 with NVMe over PCIe. Both use the Pimorni base mounted under the Pi, both Pi have an active cooler fitted, and both Pi have a HAT on top. Both setups have an extension header to lift the HAT clear of the active cooler.

Neither stack is cased. The stacks are held together using M2.5 standoffs and nuts.

They also both have the same model of drive installed: Patriot P300 M.2 PCIe Gen 3 x4 128GB Low-Power Consumption SSD - P300P128GM28

I've not noticed any temperature issues and the active cooler only ever spins during boot for the self test.
