Beginners • Re: Mirror RAID with NTFS File System

I have been hoping to use my Pi 3B with two ssd disks in a similar way using the NTFS file system. I have found various explanations of how to set this up, some say to format the disks before creating a RAID array and others to create the array and then format it.

Something I should have mentioned above: a 3B is a poor choice unless your use case is OK with low transfer speeds:
  • It's only USB2
  • All four USB ports go through a USB hub. There is only a single USB2 link between that hub and the SoC
  • Ethernet is also via the same USB hub.
  • RAID1 in software means each write goes over the single USB connection twice (probably four times if using a journaling filesystem)
  • There'll be minimal performance improvement using SSD over spinning rust. Faster seek times (which the cache will likely hide) but that's about it.

I'd expect writes across the network to the NAS to top out at around 125Mbps, reads at around 200Mbps. Or less.

And remember: RAID is not a substitute for backups. It protects against drive failure but not against other forms of data loss.
