Beginners • Re: resources for learning networking

I tried to set up a raspberry to create a Wifi hotspot for my devices via a first wifi adapter and to connect to an internet router via a second Wifi adapter, ie. it should work as sort of a bridge.
When searching the net for a ready solution, I realised that I miss a lot of basics of networking.
E.g. how to check the available network adapters and how they are configured. I have no idea about files like wpa_supplicant-wlan1.conf etc.

Can you please point me to resources (books, links, ...) where I can learn about network setup in detail?
What part of networking do you need help with? Hardware, software, or the structure if an IP block?

For hardware, there are 4 types of devices that come in two pairs. You have bridges and routers, which connect two networks together. A bridge passes everything it get from one network to the other, blindly. A router is the smart version, as it only passes packets that go to the other network. Then you have (sort of in parallel) hubs and switches, Hubs send all packets to all ports. Switches pass packets only to the port they address. Switches can be cascaded, hubs can't.

For an IPv4 block, the starting address is generally the upstream connection and the last address is a broadcast address that goes to all addresses in the block. There are three "free to use locally" IPv4 blocks. 10.*.*.*, 172.16.*.*, and 192.168.*.*. The last one is usually used as 192.168.x.*, where x will be a fixed value. Most 192.168 blocks are, in practice, 192.168.0.* or 192.168.1.* though you will occasionally see 192.168.2.*.
