There are Linux distributions which allow to do a major release upgrade. For example I use Linux Mint on my Desktop and Laptop which I can upgrade without any issue.
But there is no major release upgrade possible with Raspbian - unfortunately. You unfortunately have to setup a new OS and manually migrate all your applications and copy all your data.
But seen from the good site - you will clean up your system from any old leftover.![:)]( "Smile")
